An Honor for Blended Learning at LIMU (Aya El Sheikhi) An Inspiring Global Presence in Belgium
Nothing brings greater joy to this pioneering academic institution than following the accomplishments and excellence of its students and alumni at home and internationally.
Libyan International University (LIMU) software engineering graduate Aya El Sheikhi represents a story of success, distinction, and resilience. Whatever could have posed an obstacle, Aya turned into a foundation for strength, resolve, and achievement. She excelled academically, refusing to let her hearing impairment restrict her potential. Her university stood by her, her family offered unwavering support, and her professors encouraged her, taking immense pride in her determination. Her graduation project then surprised everyone, astonishing all with its ingenuity, precision, novelty, and vital relevance.
The project features an artificial intelligence application designed to train children on Arabic word pronunciation while delivering developmental feedback to parents and specialists. It was developed under the supervision of the exceptional and talented instructor, Ms. Jinan Adel El Tawaty.
Aya’s latest inspiring milestone is her contribution via a video showcase at the
(CI Advocacy in Action 2026) conference,
organized by the
Cochlear Implant International Community of Action (CIICA)
in Brussels, Belgium, on
October 23, 2026.
This participation comes as part of worldwide efforts to advance the rights of cochlear implant users while spotlighting their real life experiences and needs across different areas of life.
On June 15, 2026, student Aya Ashraf El Sheikhi received an invitation to participate in a roundtable discussion geared toward young cochlear implant users entitled “Young Adults with Cochlear Implants.”
Aya stands out as the first young woman to represent North Africa and Libya specifically in this event. Because personal attendance was not feasible due to circumstances, she produced a video sharing her personal journey as a young Libyan woman, a cochlear implant user, and a software engineering graduate from Libyan International University (LIMU).
Throughout the video, she detailed the listening and interactive challenges she experienced in the university setting, particularly during lectures and group exchanges when background sounds overlap or several individuals talk at once. She also highlighted the auditory fatigue caused by the continuous effort needed to parse speech, alongside the benefit of assistive tools like the Roger microphone in enhancing her lecture comprehension, while clarifying that such tools do not solve every communication barrier.
Furthermore, she underscored the essential need for accommodations that enable cochlear implant recipients to engage fully in learning, such as speaking clearly, utilizing assistive devices, and offering live captioning. Her objective was to bring an authentic story from Libya and North Africa to a global audience, fostering broader understanding of challenges that often remain invisible.
Aya wrapped up her presentation with the following statement:
> “The central message of my contribution was that although cochlear implants aid hearing, they do not render listening effortless or fatigue free. Achieving academic success does not mean difficulties are absent; rather, it is often the outcome of years of hard work, adaptation, and persistence, coupled with the vital presence of an empowering and accessible educational environment that grants cochlear implant users fair opportunities to participate and excel. That is exactly what I experienced at my university, Libyan International University (LIMU).”
