Hosted by LIMU: Scouts and Guides Commission Commemorates Derna Tragedy’s Second Anniversary

The Libyan International University (LIMU) consistently reaffirms its identity as a university without walls, actively engaging with its community to fulfill its mission and social responsibilities.

A key element of its mission is networking with institutions and organizations that align with its values and vision—a promising Libya focused on restoring noble principles. In this spirit, the Libyan International University hosted a significant national event in the “Promising Libya Hall” on the evening of Monday, September 29, 2025. The Scouts and Guides Commission in Benghazi organized the event to mark the second anniversary of the devastating Hurricane Daniel that struck Derna on September 11, 2023.

It was an emotionally evocative scene watching the Scouts and Guides in their distinctive uniforms adorned with badges and medals. Generations of pioneers, leaders, cub scouts, and brownies stood together, forming a beautiful tableau of a national social institution with deep traditions—the guardians of virtue and creators of authentic values. Two years prior, they were among the first to rush to the aid of the afflicted city of Derna, joining rescue teams in the heart of the devastated neighborhoods to offer every possible form of support. Today, they observed the second anniversary, their emotions a mix of sadness, hope, sorrow, and optimism. Under the skillful guidance of the Commission’s leaders, notably Scout Leader Dr. Tariq Al-Maqasbi, the scouting family and guests gathered for an inspirational, academic, and cultural forum. The event featured presentations of highly important scientific studies, proposals, and effective recommendations from Dr. Abdul Wahab Bubtaina, Dr. Saad Al-Ashhab, and Dr. Hassan Sasi.

The gathering was also enriched by literary works from Scout Leaders Yousef Boudawara and Ramadan Al-Faitouri. Furthermore, the commemorative event included two valuable and moving interventions by Mr. Mustafa Al-Ruqai, a veteran scout and social work pioneer, and Dr. Yaqoub Mohamed Al-Barghasi, the President of Balagrae University.

The event also featured insightful comments that reflected the culture, intellect, and high moral character of the Scouts. Attendees viewed a powerful documentary produced by the Scout Commission’s media team, which captured moving moments from the heart of the disaster where the Scouts mobilized to help their beloved Derna. LIMU’s speech, delivered by the Advisor to the University President for Culture and Media, Mr. Jaber Nour Sultan, focused on the shared vision between LIMU and the Scouting Movement in reinforcing noble values, praising the Scouts as creators of values and guardians of virtue.
