Fourth-year training at the faculty of Medicine

The fourth-year students of the faculty of Medicine received their training this morning at the University’s Clinical Skills Lab, focusing on how to perform a lumbar puncture (spinal tap) in the lower back.

The lumbar puncture (spinal tap) is performed in the lower back area, by inserting a needle between two lumbar bones (two vertebrae) during a lumbar puncture to remove a sample of the cerebrospinal fluid, which surrounds the brain and spinal cord to protect them from injuries, and it is sometimes used to inject anesthesia or chemotherapy drugs into Cerebrospinal fluid.

A lumbar puncture can help diagnose serious infections, such as meningitis, or other disorders of the central nervous system, such as Guillain-Barré syndrome, multiple sclerosis, or cancers of the brain or spinal cord.

In today\’s training, as in all exercises, it has been taken into account to apply precautionary measures to combat the Corona pandemic (Covid-19), by distributing students to several training sessions, and forcing them to wear a mask, to ensure their safety and the safety of workers, and divide them into 4 groups, each group comprising 11 students Within the center, they are divided into two smaller groups, so that each group receives an hour-long training session, in line with the new policies on physical distancing, as well as in reducing the number of students to avoid crowding into narrow spaces.
